What $2,000 gets you in Kenya
Two thousand dollars per person, land only, is a real budget in Kenya. Where you put it decides whether you come home rested or merely tired.
What the number covers
Every figure here is land only and per person, based on two people sharing. It covers stays, ground transfers, park or conservancy fees, planned experiences and our planning support.
It does not cover international flights, visas, travel insurance, tips or personal spending. We quote those separately, in writing, so the comparison between two versions of a trip stays honest.
Version one: safari first
Roughly six nights. Four in a conservancy camp with shared game drives, two in Nairobi at either end for arrival and departure.
At this budget you trade a private vehicle for a better location. That is almost always the right trade: a conservancy limits how many vehicles reach a sighting, so you spend your mornings watching animals rather than watching other cars.
Expect around $250 to $320 per person per night in a good conservancy camp on full board with drives included, and $90 to $150 for a well-run Nairobi hotel.
Version two: safari and coast
Three nights on safari, then four on the coast at Watamu or Diani. This is the version most first-time travellers actually want, because it ends with rest instead of a dawn game drive.
Take the internal flight rather than the eight-hour road transfer. It costs roughly $200 to $260 one way and buys back most of a day at each end. On a week-long trip, that day is worth far more than the saving.
Coast nights run from about $80 per person in a small guesthouse to $220 in a well-located boutique hotel with breakfast.
Where the money quietly disappears
Peak dates. Late December, and July and August in the Mara, can add 30 to 60 per cent to the same room. A week either side is often a different trip financially.
City hotels chosen for a brand name rather than a location. You are in Nairobi for one or two nights; pay for the neighbourhood, not the lobby.
A private vehicle on a short trip when a good shared guide would deliver more. On three nights, the guide matters more than the exclusivity of the seat.

That leaves a small margin for a dhow afternoon and a good dinner or two, which is usually where the memory ends up living.
